Susan Santos - Principal/Founder
My Story
Originally from Brazil, I have proudly called Chattanooga home since 1996. With a background in both Architecture and Computer Science, my career path has blended technical problem-solving with a lifelong passion for thoughtful design.
Before founding Empower Businesses, I gained experience working on commercial and residential projects through established architectural firms, contributing to multi-family, hospitality, educational, and residential design projects. After two years as a licensed architect, launching my own practice was a natural next step in combining my technical background, design experience, and desire to help people and communities grow through meaningful architecture.
Today, I focus on creating spaces that are functional, intentional, and designed around the people who use them every day.

When I am not designing, you'll find me spending time with my husband and two kids, volunteering and painting.
Design Approach
My love for architecture was born in my childhood home. Before I learned about drawings, materials and construction - I understood how spaces made people feel.
People sometimes think architect services are only for luxury homes or large commercial projects, but the truth is that the thought put into the design of the spaces we live and work shapes the way we experience life within them.
For me, architecture is less about spaces and more about the experiences, memories, and interactions of the people who will use them. Every project is an opportunity to create places that inspire connection, purpose, and a sense of belonging.
I believe thoughtful design should be accessible and meaningful — creating environments that not only function well, but also enrich everyday life for generations to come.

For every project, a portion of fees is reinvested into a local church and Empower Communities, a Chattanooga-based nonprofit. I believe my work is guided not simply by what is built, but by God’s leadership, wisdom, and purpose in every project. Through work and support, I am committed to advancing God’s Kingdom, clean energy equity, sustainable opportunity, and long-term community transformation.
I also partner with mission-driven organizations helping better understand possibilities, constraints, and development opportunities early in the process.
